Training Proccess
Getting Started – Processing Fee
A $100 processing fee is required to begin the training process.
This fee will be applied toward your total training cost.
If you are hired by a contractor, this fee may be reimbursed after you begin working (based on contractor policy).
1. Application & DOT Physical
Your application, references, and driving record will be reviewed.
Once approved, you will receive a medical form for your DOT physical.
You are responsible for obtaining your DOT physical prior to training.
We can recommend locations, but the provider you choose is ultimately up to you.
The physical includes:
Vital signs (blood pressure, temperature)
Vision and hearing
Reflexes
Basic physical ability (lifting 30–40 lbs, pushing/pulling)
No gown or clothing change is required.
Cost: Applicant responsibility
2. CDL Permit Preparation
Begin studying the Maryland CDL Manual:
Sections 1–3: General Knowledge
Section 4: Passenger
Section 5: Air Brakes
Section 10: School Bus

3. Obtain Your CDL Learner’s Permit
After completing your DOT physical and fingerprinting:
Go to the MVA and take the required knowledge tests
Obtain your CDL Class B Learner’s Permit with:
Passenger (P)
School Bus (S)
Air Brakes
Permit Cost: $106 (paid by applicant)
4. Begin Training
Once you have your permit:
You can begin behind-the-wheel training
If hired by a contractor:
They will typically pay for your pre-employment drug test
You will be added to their safety-sensitive testing program
You will sign required drug and alcohol policy forms
5. CDL Training Program
Training includes:
EDLT Classes (BTW & Theory)
Pre-trip inspection
Driving skills (maneuvers)
On-road driving
Cost:
If not hired by a partner contractor: $800–$1,000 non-refundable fee. (applicant responsibility) Must be paid half before starting and half at the end. A contract must be signed understanding this requirement.
If hired by a partner contractor: contractor may cover costs (varies)
Additional details:
Training hours are unpaid
Training typically takes 8 to 25+ hours, depending on the applicant
Majority of the training time will will be based entirely on the applicant. The harder you work on it, the faster you may obtain your license.
Applicants who do not complete training in a timely manner may incur additional charges, or removal from the program
6. Final Certification (If Required)
Some counties or contractors require:
Classroom training
Behind-the-wheel certification with a county instructor
Complete fingerprinting:
Scheduling instructions will be provided
Some contractors may reimburse (varies)
Requirements and pay (if applicable) vary by contractor and location
